I am thrilled to share with the followers of our Central Coast Living Blog, the press release that was distributed by Ballantines PR to local, regional, national and trade industry media outlets announcing this exciting news!

Portola Hotel & Spa, Monterey’s first and only Silver LEED® EB certified hotel, has been selected by Smart Meetings magazine as a winner of its 11th annual Platinum Choice award. This prestigious award recognizes excellence in service and amenities among meeting hotels and resorts in the U.S., Canada, Mexico and the Caribbean. An additional category recognizes outstanding services by destination marketing organizations and convention and visitor bureaus across North America.

Out of thousands of qualified properties and organizations, Smart Meetings honors a select group of 192 businesses this year, one being Portola Hotel & Spa. Winners earn this recognition by setting exemplary standards in a range of categories, including ambience, amenities, breadth of resources, facility quality, guest services, meeting space, meeting packages, recreational activities, restaurant and dining facilities, and technical support. The honorees are chosen by the publication’s readers, who vote for their favorites, with additional input from editors and industry experts.

“The winners reflect the diversity of destinations and properties available to meet the needs of meeting planners. These organizations, hotels and resorts exemplify the professional standards expected by event professionals and attendees,” said Marin Bright, Smart Meetings Founder and Publisher. “We are proud to honor industry leaders that celebrate excellence, innovation, exemplary service and facilities to help make meetings and events extraordinary for planners and attendees.”

Meet Arturo Corres; hardworking, takes charge and extremely reliable.  Arturo has been pumping out clean dishes and keeping the kitchen running at the Portola Hotel & Spa in Monterey, California for the past 22 years. He joined the team as an entry level Dishwasher and within a few years, his outstanding performance and high standards for cleanliness showed in every task he was assigned.   Arturo was quickly promoted to Dishwashing Supervisor, a job he takes great pride in, every single day.

Organization and staff management are important to Arturo, especially when he and his team are supplying glassware, china, utensils, pots and pans to the Hotel’s two bustling restaurants and onsite banquet events throughout the property. Arturo is the hub of the Kitchen Department and is not afraid to step in and assist in his fellow team members; in fact he is known to help with plating and numerous other kitchen duties, always with a smile. When the Hotel has a plated dinner for over 750+ people, Arturo often joins the line and never leaves until the last plate is plated, then quickly returns to his cleaning station.

What stands out about Arturo Corres? -  Simple – the ability to get any job done – dishes for 1,100 people? No problem, Arturo’s your man!

Live to Run – Jair’s Story

Jair Sanchez, Elite Master Runner  2014 Bay Area Race

Many of the topics we cover on our Central Coast Living Blog are any number of the wonderful sights, events or activities to experience here on the Monterey Bay. Occasionally, we are lucky enough to welcome a Guest Blogger to bring an element of unique insight, but we are truly honored to have the opportunity to tell the story of one the Portola Hotel & Spa’s very special employees.

Jair Sanchez has been working at the Portola Hotel & Spa for over seven years and is currently the Kitchen Supervisor, but his journey has taken this elite runner on a much greater path. Jair began running when he was in the 6th grade. His natural talent for the sport shone through during a 1200 meter race where he took first place, but it was not until he was 19, when he ran a blistering 49-second 400 meters.

Jair took 3rd place in the 400 meters State Morelos, 1992

Soon, Jair immigrated to the United States, but because of work he put aside his pursuit of a competitive running career and concentrated on making a better life for himself. As Jair began to establish himself in this country, he was hired at the Portola Hotel & Spa in 2006 which provided a springboard to return to running at an elite level. Two years ago, Jair made a commitment to return to the rigourous training required of a competitive athlete.

Jair in 2010 over weight at 190 pounds

He has excelled for someone who was way from the sport for such a long time, but through hours of training, sacrifice, discipline and the support of the Portola, Jair has quickly become a fixture in many of the races throughout the Central Coast of California, crediting his friend and trainer Ulises Fernandez for much of his success.

While reaching  a masters level of elite running is a goal well within his sight as evidenced by a 1:15:13 time at the Half Marathon of Modesto, Jair is most proud of being able to influence his friends to live healthier lifestyles. His message to anyone who wants to improve their overall health and feel better about themselves, “It is never too late to change!”

The Portola Hotel & Spa is extremely proud to support Jair and all he has achieved and with his drive and passion, we are sure to see much more from this very special part of the Portola family!
