Whether you are a classic car aficionado like Jay Leno or just a casual observer, there is nothing like seeing the glimmering shine of a freshly detailed car or hearing the roar of an engine coming to life. Celebrities of the human and automotive kind will be on hand August 11-17, 2014 during the Monterey Peninsula’s Car Week. What was once a couple of events has transformed into an entire week of automotive excess with no less than 25 separate events including shows, auctions, rallies and entertainment. Most of the action centers on the major viewing competitions and the various auctions. From the tony Pebble Beach Concourse d’ Elegance and the horsepower and miniature might of Downtown Pacific Grove’s Little Car Show, to The Quail, a Motorsports Gathering, the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca and the RM Auctions Sports & Classics of Monterey auction, the multitude of offerings is almost too many to fathom.

The Portola Hotel & Spa is not only right in the thick of the action, but it also plays host to the RM Auctions Sports & Classics auction event. With secure covered parking and a number of alternate transportation options right at your fingertips, classic car owners or fans of the cars themselves can easily access any of the events around the Peninsula. As headquarters for Friday and Saturday’s RM auctions the Portola’s restaurants will be featuring special hours with Peter B’s opening for lunch at 11am on Thursday August 14th and Jacks Restaurant open for Dinner until 11pm on August 14th & 15th and Jacks Lounge open until 1am Thursday through Saturday.

If you need a break from the rev of the engines, the Monterey Bay Coastal Recreation Trail is located just outside the Portola Hotel & Spa. Wander along some of the most beautiful coastline in the country before returning back to the action. So put the top down and motor into the Monterey Peninsula for what some say is the greatest gathering of steel and wheels in the world. Car Week on the Monterey Peninsula is an event not to be missed!

Once again, Spring brings the kings of the hairpin turn to the Monterey Peninsula for a full slate of American Le Mans, MotoGP, Historic Motorsports and Superbike racing.

In its ninth year at Mazda Raceway and featuring the MotoGP World Championship and a full slate of American Motorcycle Association (AMA) races, this weekend is one of the sport’s most popular events and draws huge crowds to watch 18 separate races over the three days.

Part of the Monterey Peninsula’s Classic Car Week, the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion, August 16-18, 2013 offers a glimpse into the past as authentic, race proven; period autos compete in class to determine bragging rights. This year, the featured marque is the American classic Chevrolet Corvette celebrating its 60th anniversary.

Cherries Jubilee

While Classic Car Week showed of the best of the best in foreign and domestic antique and early model autos, Cherry’s Jubilee brings a decidedly more homegrown flavor to the Central Coast. Dubbed the “biggest oldies party of the year”, the “Cherry’s” as it is fondly referred to, takes place all over the Monterey Peninsula and is a celebration of the restored and supped up American Muscle Cars and Hot Rods made popular in the 1950’s and 60’s.

In its 20th year, the Cherry’s Jubilee is presented by the Salinas Valley Memorial Hospital Foundation and proceeds benefit the hospital itself. The event runs September 12th – 16th and features locations throughout the area including: Cannery Row, Fisherman’s Wharf, Downtown Monterey, Old Town Salinas and a poker run through Pacific Grove, Carmel Valley and Pebble Beach.

What sets the Jubilee apart from some of the other local auto events is the passion and hours of loving restoration the owners have put into their cars. Very few are acquired in mint condition with the majority are painstakingly refurbished from the ground up and are actually driven to and from these “show and shine” events. Even more impressive, is the willingness of the owners to share their tips and stories to fans of their autos.

Cherry’s Jubilee will bring back fond memories of malt shops and car hops and may just remind you of a simpler time. Oh, and the cars are pretty cool to look at too!
