Gearing Up for Winter

It’s that time of year again, the most wonderful time of the year!  And while some of us have been humming Christmas carols since last December, we think it’s about time to start getting in the spirit!

This year, you need look no further than the beautiful Monterey Peninsula to gear up and get ready to haul out some holly and deck the halls! Sure it’s no winter wonderland, but who needs the messy snow anyway?  There’s no better way to escape the hustle and bustle of busy cities, or forget the stress of home than planning your winter getaway in lovely Monterey.

Neighbored by sweet Pacific Grove, one of America’s last hometowns, and cozy Carmel-by-the-sea, a romantic and charming destination like no other, the Peninsula is guaranteed to be a little slice of holiday heaven.  Be dazzled by the twinkling lights and breathtaking sights of Steinbeck’s Cannery Row, decked out for the holidays; marvel at the several-story-high, elegantly dressed, Christmas tree towering over Carmel Plaza, or let the charm of decorated historic downtown Monterey fill you up with holiday cheer.

The holidays on the Monterey Peninsula offer fun and excitement for the whole family.  On December 6 and 7, from 5-9pm, the California State Parks holds its Annual Christmas in the Adobes, an event celebrating the history and holiday traditions that make Monterey so special.  Participants tour over 20 historic adobes by night and enjoy entertainment and refreshment along the way.  As for the young ones, the local area is nothing short of magical, at Pacific Grove’s Caledonia Park on December 7th during the 20th Annual Stillwell’s Fun in the Park.  Transforming the park into a winter wonderland, this annual event features a day of fun and entertainment for the whole family amid the beautifully decorated park, complete with twinkling lights and a visit from Santa himself aboard a shiny fire truck. And don’t miss Santa make another grand entrance via helicopter during the Carmel Valley Chamber of Commerce’s 55th Annual Santa-Fly in on December 14th.

Don’t let the season pass you by without experiencing the magic of the Monterey Peninsula throughout the winter season.

A hub for culture on the Monterey Peninsula, Carmel-by-the-Sea has always been a little slice of heaven with a big devotion to the arts.  Its streets are filled with charming art galleries and state-of-the-art performing art centers boasting packed performance schedules, so it is no wonder that Carmel is the home of the annually acclaimed Carmel Art & Film Festival.

Celebrating art from virtually every medium, the festival runs from October 9-13, 2013 and includes performances and exhibits featuring music, fine art, photography and of course, film.  This year’s featured artist is Louisiana native George Rodrigue, who considers Carmel the second home for himself and his iconic blue dog.  This year’s festival will include a live painting demonstration and lecture by Rodrigue at the Patron Carnival Party held in his honor.

Art comes to life on stage with the musical portion of the festival.  Highlighting young local talent and emerging artists alike, Carmel Art & Film is planning a line-up to rival that of last year’s bash, sure to get you out of your seat and dancing the night away.

No film festival would be complete without a dazzling line-up of the best in independent films.  Screening the best in independent film in four categories: Narrative Feature, Documentary, Short, and Student, California Art and Film Festival will show over 100 films over the four days at such venues as the Sunset Center, the Golden Bough Playhouse and the Carmel High School Performing Arts Center.  As a special treat, the whole family is invited Saturday night for a special screening on beautiful Carmel Beach.  Four days of cinematic pleasure culminates in the presentation of five awards at a special Filmmaker’s Gala at Sunset Center on Thursday, commemorating the best in each of the four film category, as well as the presentation of the coveted Clint Eastwood Filmmakers Award, given to the director, actor, producer or cinematographer who best exemplifies Eastwood’s commitment to the craft of film making.

The Carmel Art & Film Festival is four days of art and culture you won’t want to miss, visit the event website www.carmelartandfilm.com to keep updated on the event line-up and other important details, and to get your tickets today!

August 28 – September 2, 2013

Nothing quite says summer like a trip to the fair. Whether it’s a local, county or state fair, the smells of cotton candy and kettle corn mixed together with laughter and music make for an experience that is both familiar and new at the same time. The fair is Americana at its best and an event that holds a special place in almost everyone’s heart.

Since 1935, the Monterey County Fair has been bringing back that iconic childhood feeling while making new memories for the next generation. Who can forget, or wait, for the food, rides, livestock, carnival games and plain old-fashioned fun. This year, the theme is “At the Heart of it All” and from August 28 through September 2, 2013, the Monterey County Fair returns once again to bring smiles to the Monterey Peninsula.

The Fair kicks off on Wednesday August 28th with Kids Day. Admission is free all day long for children under the age of 12.  Kids Day features children’s themed entertainment all day long, including KWAV’s Central Coast’s Got Talent Show at 4pm, Circus Imagination performing throughout the day and the Marshall Tucker Band at 7:30pm.

Thursday the 29th is Senior’s Day for those ages 65 and better! The Ag Building will feature cooking demonstrations and at 5:30pm the People’s Choice Wine Tasting event (with separate admission) is always a crowd favorite! The evening fun goes on with the iconic 90’s band, the Spin Doctors taking the stage at 7:30pm.

Military Appreciation Day is Friday the 30th and admission for active duty military is FREE with a valid ID. There is a military dedication at 6:00pm at the Pattee Arena followed by a free Rodeo at 6pm. The Ag Building is home to the Beer Stampede from 5:30pm to 7:30pm (with separate admission) and live music from the Tower of Power closes out the evening’s fun.

Saturday the 31st brings the Junior Livestock Auction and Water Awareness Day. The auction starts at 10:00am and the day also features a free Rodeo at 6:00pm. The evening’s entertainment is cover band, Journey Revisited which hits the stage at 7:30pm.

Fiesta Day, Sunday September, 1st continues the week’s festivities and features Hispanic themed music throughout the day. Additional livestock shows include the ever popular Rabbit and Round Robin Shows at 9:00am and the Pee Wee and Adult Showmanship events at 5:00pm and 6:00pm respectively.

The Fair wraps up Labor Day, Monday, September 2nd with International Day. The Wool Auction is at 12:30pm with the Monterey County Pops close out the week’s music from 4:30pm to 5:30pm.

In addition to the special entertainment, daily entertainment includes cooking demonstrations, wine tasting, dancing, rides, hypnotists and carnival games just to name a few. The Fair is not to me missed, so come on out and create memories to last a lifetime!
