Inspiration behind the design of the Portola Hotel Lobby
Guest Post from Janine Chicourrat, General Manager Portola Hotel & Spa
Our renovation is underway at the Portola Hotel & Spa and I am thrilled to share some of the latest updates including the inspiration behind the design of the Portola lobby. As many of you know, here at the Portola Hotel & Spa we recently announced a $6 Million dollar renovation encompassing the 9,600+ square foot lobby. The lobby renovation encompasses numerous design features including the use of teak wood, complemented by creative lighting and of course the beautiful ficus trees that are housed here under our beautiful atrium.
Rendering of the Upper Lobby
When we decided to remodel our lobby our experienced design team took the redesign of the Monterey Conference Center into great consideration, which is moving into a more modern tone. We still wanted to set ourselves apart so we came up with a resort- like feel design aesthetic. This concept wasn’t hard to create for our designers at the San Francisco Puccini Group, as well as our Portola team to become inspired by, with the Monterey Bay area being home to some of the most beautiful beaches and sea life in the world along with local landmarks like Fisherman’s Wharf and Cannery Row, all became key elements for our redesign.
The existing clean architectural lines, natural light and live trees in the atrium space will be further enhanced with modern furnishings, locally inspired material and augmented lighting pose for a more inviting appeal for the guest experience. The new lobby will evoke the sea with subtle nods to the sights of the Monterey Bay found even in the insets of the carpet, driftwood accent console and ocean-themed details.
Rendering of the New Bar and Lobby Seating
In addition, we can’t wait for the opening of our new bar and lobby seating, which will no doubt become one of the prime gathering places at the hotel and our Downtown Monterey neighborhood. Guests will be able to take in the unique ambiance, as well as enjoy fantastic drinks and food in this fun, yet sophisticated setting. This lower lobby area will also feature pivoting doors and enhanced lighting providing a variety of seating types that will allow our guests the opportunity to experience the space differently throughout the day and into night.
