Sovino Guest Blog by Claire Sutton – Proprietor & Sommelier

Sovino Wine Bar’s purpose has always been simple: to make wine enjoyable for the novice wine drinker or the expert sommelier and everyone in between. It doesn’t matter how many points something scored, which wine critic said what, or what varietal is in fashion.  Sweet or dry, tannic or fruity, we want everyone to drink what they like and have a great time doing it.

Sovino wants to bring you the best of California wine.  We have a unique focus in that we have the opportunity to bring you great selections from all over the state in addition to being locally focused.  We’ve gathered some of the best from Monterey County and the Central Coast and combined them with great wines from Napa, Sonoma, El Dorado, Lodi, the list goes on.  Our bar menu reflects the shop’s diversity and allows you to compare regions and styles.  We give you access to a lot of small case production options from wineries that you won’t find anywhere else, all in one place!

We love wine (and beer too!), music, and art and we try to combine them as often as we can. We have live music regularly and host many crafting and sipping events throughout the year.  Our Paint and Sip classes are held every other week and are an incredibly popular version of the standard paint nights. Our class is taught by retired art teacher Bunny Paivine.  She calls on a lifetime of painting for passion and years of teaching experience to take classes though a step-by-step local land or seascape scene. While experienced artists may get to learn some new techniques, have no fear! No painting experience is required. With the help of Bunny and wine, the creative juices flow and the end result for even novice painters is very impressive.

We’re also excited here at Sovino for the addition of our new outdoor patio! It’s the perfect spot to have a glass of wine or beer, one of our small plates, and people watch in the sunshine (when it stops raining) along Portola’s beautiful promenade.
