All Things Wine & Beer
To wine lovers, Monterey County has known for its many boutique wineries and vineyards but, most recently, our local region is getting its props for an emerging craft beer scene. Here at the Portola Hotel & Spa our wine and craft beer programs are being recognized by industry leaders including the Wine Spectator Award of Excellence, the Los Angeles International Beer Competition, the Great American Beer Festival and more.
Located right behind the Portola Hotel is our onsite craft brewery, Peter B’s Brewpub. As Monterey’s original craft brewery, established in 1996, Peter B’s brews up some of the best craft beers in Monterey and beyond. When asked about the best brews to drink during the summertime, Head Brewer, Justin Rivard recommends selecting craft brews with a lower ABV (alcohol by volume) – “this helps you stay hydrated when drinking in the summer sun! Try to stay away from Imperial beers, if drinking in the heat! Think light, crisp and refreshing.” Rivard adds, “fruit-based beers and sours are worth considering too as are Saisons, wheat beers, pale ales and lagers, all pairing nicely with summer-themed foods. Personally, I would avoid maltier heavier beers, BUT, as the sun goes down, I must say, they are pretty nice to enjoy around a beach bonfire. “

Curating the award-winning wine list at Jacks Monterey here at the Portola is Brian Hein, Director of Food & Beverage. Hein shared some fantastic tips for sipping your way through summer. “Great go to wines for a warm summer day are the refreshing, dry and crispy Sauvignon Blancs. Featuring great minerality and fruity characteristics, these high acidic wines pair terrifically with the acidity of our local heirloom tomatoes. Specifically, the Bernardus Griva Sauvignon Blanc can be enjoyed throughout our warm summer months – with its tropical fruit and melon notes, this local favorite makes for a refreshing glass! And if you’re in the mood for pairing the perfect wine with fresh caught salmon or tender of beef filets hot off the barbecue, Hein says, “try the luscious, fruity Pinot Noirs out of the Santa Lucia Highlands here in Monterey County”
