Best Items To Have In Food Storage With Chef Danny

As people everywhere are staying home more – whether it’s a self-quarantine or government mandated – due to COVID-19, the need to have food storage is becoming more important.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) suggests having a 2-week supply of prescription and over the counter medications, food and other essentials.

Portola Hotel & Spa Executive Chef Danny Abbruzzese has some suggestions for which items you should keep stocked in your pantry that are easy to find, verstile, affordable, and have a longer shelf-life.

He has put them into three food storage categories:

Main Starches

  • Rice
  • Pasta

“Egg noodles are the most versatile,” Chef Danny said.

  • Polenta
  • Oatmeal
  • Cream of Wheat
  • Cereal

Canned Goods

  • Tuna
  • Tomato sauce
  • Beets (very nutritious)
  • Soups
  • Broths
  • Canned beans
  • Canned tomatoes
  • Canned corn

Other Items

  • Olive oil
  • Nuts (good source of protein)
  • Dried fruits
  • Beans
  • Water

If you don’t have room in your pantry or cupboards for food storage items like these, find a storage bin you can put them in and leave it in your laundry room, kitchen, or garage for easy access.
