What Locals Love About Monterey

Feb 14, 2024

Nestled along the picturesque California coast, Monterey's unique blend of natural beauty, rich history, and culture captivates both the hearts of visitors and locals. From the serene shores of its beaches to the charming streets lined with shops and eateries, Monterey has a magnetic allure that continually draws people in. In honor of Valentine's Day this week, we're sharing what Monterey County locals love about this special destination. We took a second to talk to some locals; here's what they said.

Marine Life

Monterey is home to an array of marine species including whales, dolphins, sea otters, and seals, making it such a unique place for nature lovers and the first thing that locals love about Monterey. a group of otters huddling together

The Beaches

Monterey County's beaches are cherished by visitors and locals alike. Many flock to catch the sunset and relish in the beauty of our sandy and rugged shores every day of the week. For first-time visitors seeking guidance on which beach to explore, check out this blog postview of Carmel Beach

Close to Big Sur

Another thing locals love about Monterey is its proximity to charming spots located just south of the city, Big Sur boasts a rugged coastline, dramatic cliffs, and enchanting redwood forests. Many locals love to hike its trails and take advantage of its beauty.

The Food

There are many amazing places to grab a bite here in Monterey with such diverse cultural cuisines. Specifically, one thing our locals really love is the clam chowder. Next time you visit, be sure to stop by Jacks Monterey, Peter B's Brewpub or Old Fisherman's Wharf for some authentic Monterey Clam Chowder.close of bread bowl of clam chowder

Walkability

One of our favorite things about Monterey is how walkable the downtown area is. You can also easily get to Alvarado Street to Cannery Row and Lighthouse Avenue by walking down the scenic Monterey Rec Trail.

•    Golf: Known for our world-class courses, it's not just visitors who take advantage of our golf offerings. Locals regularly schedule tee times and enjoy the game with friends and family.aerial view of golf course

The People

Monterey, being a popular destination, embodies a strong sense of hospitality among its locals. So don't hesitate to ask for directions or recommendations from them, as they'll be so happy to help!

The Weather

Monterey has a mild climate year round with temperatures ranging in the 40s- 60s in the winter and spring, and 50s to 70s in the summer and fall. With an average of 267 sunny days in Monterey County, it's almost always gorgeous around here!

Taking the Scenic Route

One thing many locals love to do is drive down Ocean View Blvd & Sunset Drive, and take in the Pacific Grove beauty. Many bring mini picnics and enjoy the view in their car, or even take the drive at night to appreciate the stars and hear the waves.

Small Town Feel

Monterey definitely has a family- friendly, small town feel, but at the same time, there is so much to do! It's one of the many reasons why this part of California is so unique.

Farmers Markets

Monterey County boasts numerous farms yielding an abundance of fresh produce. Locals love the fresh food and local art available at these vibrant markets. Farmers markets happen daily across Monterey County, but the Old Monterey Marketplace is in the heart of downtown Monterey and is conveniently situated just steps away from the Portola Hotel & Spa on Tuesdays!close up of fruit from fruit vendors

It's no secret that Monterey has such unique beauty, and one of the best ways to explore this is through our hiking trails. Locals love hiking through Point Lobos, Big Sur, Fort Ord, and even strolling down the Monterey Rec Trail.cliff overlooking ocean
