A Weekend Trip to Monterey

Apr 22, 2026

While there’s no shortage of things to do in Monterey, it is not always necessary to take a full week to explore this part of California. It is totally possible to experience what Monterey has to offer in one weekend, so we've created an itinerary for your weekend trip so that you can experience this destination without taking extra days off!

Friday Evening

Check in at the Portola Hotel & Spa

Start your weekend trip off right by checking in to your coastal-inspired guest room to relax and unwind before your activities for the evening.

Walking Tour of Historic Monterey

After a long day of traveling, stretch your legs and take a short walk to the Monterey State Historic Park and step into the past with their “Monterey Walking Path of History.” Just follow the yellow-tiled markers to explore 12 buildings, key to Monterey’s history.

Have Dinner at Jacks

After your stroll through Monterey’s history, head to our on-site restaurant, Jacks Monterey for dinner. Sit back in the lobby, where live trees add a relaxed, natural feel while you eat.

Head to Fisherman’s Wharf to Watch the Sunset

After dinner, head to Fisherman’s Wharf to watch the sunset. Fisherman’s Wharf is a short walk away from the Portola Hotel & Spa and provides incredible views of the sun setting over the harbor and behind the Portola, making it a spectacular place to end your day. You might even get to see an otter or a seal taking in the sunset too!

Saturday Morning

Get coffee on Alvarado Street

Start your morning off right with coffee and breakfast from one of the many bakeries and coffee shops in the area. With options including Captain + Stoker, Six Over, Carmel Bakery (with access from our lobby), and Ad Astra Bread Co. you are sure to start your morning off right. The best part is all of these locations are just a quick walk away from our front doors.

Walk Down Oceanview Boulevard in Pacific Grove

After breakfast, drive down to Pacific Grove and head for a walk on Ocean View Boulevard where you can see beautiful blooming flowers called the “Magic Carpet.” It is truly a spectacular view as vibrant purple flowers decorate the already scenic trail. Make sure you stop by Point Pinos Lighthouse on your walk as this hidden gem holds fascinating history.

Saturday Afternoon - Evening

Explore Garrapata State Park

Take a scenic drive down Highway 1 to see magnificent coastal views before stopping at Garrapata State Park. This scenic state park has incredible path with blooms in the spring months but is a must see on any visit.
