3 Scenic Routes in Monterey
Jul 22, 2025
While Monterey boasts some of the most beautiful trails in the world, going in a car allows you to see more of the Monterey coastline that isn't quite walkable. Through these scenic routes you will get to enjoy even more of the natural beauty of this area while in the comfort of your own car. In this week's blog, we go over three scenic routes in Monterey with the breathtaking rugged coastline and jaw dropping views along the way.
1. 17-Mile Drive
True to its name, this drive stretches across 17 stunning miles from Pacific Grove to Pebble Beach with 17 gorgeous points of interest to stop at along the way. At the start of the drive, you will get to see an elevated view of Monterey Bay at Shepherd's Knoll before driving down toward the water. Make sure to stop by at the Lone Cypress tree, which has been an iconic symbol of resilience and strength, with people all across the country coming to see this 250-year-old tree. You will also be able to see lots of different wildlife here from seals and otters and even deer! There is a small vehicle admission fee in order to experience this scenic route, but the views along the way are worth it. Check out Pebble Beach's website to learn more!
2. Highway 1
Highway 1 is known as one of the most beautiful scenic routes in the country. This stretch of highway has sublime views and will allow you to see much of what Monterey has to offer. Start this stunning drive towards the north part of Monterey County at Moss Landing where you can see a working fishing port, or head to the tidepools at Moss Landing State Beach to see sea life before driving along the coast of Monterey. Head to beautiful Carmel-by-the-Sea and continue south ending in Big Sur. This drive is the perfect scenic route making it a must for any travel itinerary.
3. Ocean View Boulevard
This street in Pacific Grove takes you along the edge of the Monterey Peninsula starting at Lovers Point and ending at Asilomar State Beach with lots of gorgeous views along the way. One of the special things about this area are the different kinds of flowers that bloom throughout the year, with the Candelabra Aloe blooming a brilliant red in the winter. During the spring, many visitors flock to see the vivid colors of the ice plant which locals call the "Magic Carpet" or the "Purple Carpet". Even if you visit when these flowers aren't in bloom you will still have a magical experience seeing all the beauty the Monterey coastline has to offer on this scenic route.
