Eco-Friendly Hotel in Monterey: Portola Hotel & Spa’s Green Initiatives

Apr 20, 2026

At the Portola Hotel & Spa, we strive to support the green efforts within our community and implement sustainable initiatives throughout the Hotel. These practices are important to us as they help protect the natural beauty of Monterey while reducing our overall impact on the environment. We’ve long taken part in programs focused on conserving natural resources, and we’re proud to be a U.S. Green Building Council LEED® Certified hotel. In honor of Earth Day, we’re sharing some of the ways our hotel stays environmentally conscious, so when you visit, you can feel confident knowing your stay supports the earth.

Water Stations

Water stations are located throughout the hotel, and can be found in the lobby, in the fitness center, and on the 2nd, 3rd (two locations), 4th, 5th, and 6th floors. These filtered stations make it easy for guests to refill and stay hydrated without relying on single-use plastic bottles. For added convenience, 24oz Hydro Flasks are also available for purchase at the front desk.

Eco Design Choices

Thoughtful design choices also play a role in our sustainability efforts. Guest rooms feature Green Label Plus, certified carpet from the Carpet & Rug Institute, recognized for its low emissions of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), helping to support better indoor air quality. We also use low- or no-VOC paints throughout the hotel and incorporate wallpaper made with 20% post-consumer recycled materials.

Guest Room Recycling

In our guest rooms, recycling is handled by our team with intention. Housekeeping staff separate recyclable materials whenever possible, helping ensure that as much waste as possible is diverted from landfills and properly processed.

Cogeneration System

Our hot water needs are supported by an efficient cogeneration system that generates electricity on-site while simultaneously producing hot water. This dual-purpose approach helps reduce energy waste and supports a more sustainable operation overall.

Reduced Waste Conference Program

We’re committed to helping meeting and event planners host greener, more sustainable gatherings through our Reduced Waste Conference Program. This initiative supports eco-conscious events by minimizing environmental impact while maintaining a high standard of service and hospitality.

Our sustainable meeting features include:

  • Composting post-consumer organic waste and recycling materials
  • Partnering with environmentally responsible vendors and exhibit companies
  • Replacing disposable items with reusable China, glassware, and silverware
  • Offering organic, locally sourced, and sustainable menu options
  • Supplying a detailed Sustainability Report with metrics, including carbon emissions, recycled and composted waste diverted from landfills, sustainable seafood metrics, and more

Green LEEDers

In 2010, we created an in-house employee-led team called Green LEEDers. The mission of the team is to get the hotel involved in locally-focused community initiatives including Save Our Shores’ beach clean-ups, Ag Against Hunger’s gleaning project, and more.
