Four Coastal Trails with the Best Views in Monterey County

May 22, 2025

While Monterey attractions such as the Monterey Bay Aquarium and Old Fisherman's Wharf certainly bring in visitors to the area, the region's sweeping coastal views and unique California beauty is something that all visitors make sure they don't miss while they're here. There's no shortage of jaw-dropping locations to admire Monterey County's beauty, but in this week's blog, we're focusing on gorgeous coastal trails in Monterey County with the best views. Add these locations to your itinerary, because you definitely don't want to miss these!

1. Asilomar Coast Trail

The Asilomar Coast Trail is a stunning, easy trail that stretches along Asilomar State Beach. The path includes wood-panneled walkways, a quaint wooden gazebo overlooking the ocean, and pathways to the beach. The trail is gorgeous, filled with California wildflowers and vegetation, and the rugged rocky coastline. It's beautiful no matter what time of day you visit, but it is magical on clear evenings. Locals and visitors alike flock to the area to watch the sunset on display while the sky is painted in beautiful colors of gold and peach. Parking is available on the street and some small lots. Be sure to get there a little early if you're going to watch the sunset, as it is a favorite spot in Monterey County!

2. Point Lobos State Natural Reserve

Point Lobos State Natural Reserve is often referred to as the "crown jewel" of the California State Park system because of its unique beauty. The trails here wind through cypress trees, rocky cliffs, and tide pools, and offer several viewpoints with different perspectives of the stunning coastline. One of the most popular trails, the Cypress Grove Trail, provides breathtaking ocean vistas and a chance to see sea otters and seals. This trail is relatively easy, making it a favorite for families and casual hikers. The entire park is rich in biodiversity, so there is unique California beauty no matter which trails you're on. The park has a $10 per vehicle entrance fee, and is open daily from 8am-7pm. Visit their website for more information.

3. Monterey Bay Coastal Trail

This extensive trail stretches for miles along the beautiful Monterey Bay from Castroville all the way to Pacific Grove. The trail is perfect for walking, running, or biking, and connects several parks and beaches, offering easy access to various sights and attractions. The Monterey Bay Coastal Trail features stunning views of the bay, as well as access to Old Fisherman's Wharf, Cannery Row, and the Monterey Bay Aquarium. Be sure to look out for sea lions lounging on the rocks and sea otters swimming in the waves, and seals nursing their young (depending on the time of year). The flat terrain makes this trail accessible to all fitness levels, and it's an amazing way to get around during your visit. The Portola Hotel & Spa is only about a 3-minute walk from the trail, making it even more convenient!

4. Trail on Ocean View Blvd. in Pacific Grove

A continuation of the Monterey Bay Rec Trail, this trail offers some of the most picturesque coastal scenery in Monterey County with its rugged cliffs and crashing waves. There are several vistas great for pictures, but something that makes this path so beautiful are the unique plants that bloom at different times of the year. In the winter the Candelabra Aloe blooms a brilliant red and adds a pop of color to the deep blue backdrop. In the spring, many visitors flock to see the vivid colors of the ice plant. Locals call this stunning display the "Magic Carpet" or "Purple Carpet" because the flowers completely cover parts of the trail. It is truly beautiful with the ocean in the background and blooms until the end of June, so be sure to plan a visit soon!
