Portola Book Club! August Pick: Whalefall by Daniel Kraus

Aug 13, 2026

Welcome back to another Portola Book Club blog! This month, we're diving into a thrilling story set in Monterey. Daniel Kraus's Whalefall takes readers into the Monterey Bay for a story of survival, family, and a complicated relationship between a father and son. As always, you'll find copies of this month's book available to borrow from our lobby library during your stay.

August Pick

Whalefall by Daniel Kraus is a suspenseful novel set right here on the Monterey Peninsula. The story follows 17-year-old Jay Gardiner, a scuba diver who heads into the waters off Monastery Beach in Carmel. What begins as a dangerous dive quickly becomes a fight for survival when Jay is swallowed by a sperm whale. The book has been adapted into a movie, which was filmed in several locations in Monterey County, and stars Austin Abrams and Josh Brolin. The film, written by Kraus and director Brian Duffield, is set to hit theaters on October 16, 2026.

Where to Visit

Monastery Beach

Start with the location at the heart of the story: Monastery Beach in Carmel. The beach sits north of Point Lobos State Natural Reserve and is where Jay begins his fateful dive. While the novel goes beneath the surface, you can enjoy the scenery from the shore and take in the coastline that inspired the story, as Monastery Beach is strictly not a swimming beach. Just like in the book, locals really do call the beach “Mortuary Beach” as it has powerful riptides. For a safer swimming area, Del Monte Beach and San Carlos Beach are recommended.

Monterey Bay

The waters of Monterey Bay are practically another character in Whalefall as Kraus gives a vivid description of the location. The novel takes advantage of the area's incredible underwater environment, including the deep Monterey Submarine Canyon and the marine life that makes the bay so unique. There are incredible views of the Bay almost anywhere in Monterey, but if you want a closer look, check out whale watching or sailing tours.

Where to Read

For a setting that feels connected to the story, take the book to Monastery Beach. There is no better place to read the book than the setting itself. Bring a picnic blanket and settle in as you also take in the views. If you'd rather stay close to the hotel, grab a copy from our lobby library and find a comfortable spot at Portola Hotel & Spa.

Cocktail Pairing

After exploring Monterey, enjoy a Cucumber Martini from Jacks Monterey. Made with Hendrick’s Gin, St. Germain, and fresh cucumber, it’s a light and refreshing choice to enjoy while settling in with Whalefall.
