Jul 3, 2026
Welcome back to another Portola Book Club blog! We're excited to continue our series with another novel that has deep ties to our destination. Monterey County has inspired countless authors over the years, and few books capture the spirit of Monterey quite like this month’s book, Cannery Row. As always, you'll find copies of this month's book available to borrow from our lobby library during your stay.
July Pick
Cannery Row by John Steinbeck, is one of the most beloved novels ever written about Monterey. Set in the historic waterfront district during the Great Depression, the novel brings the neighborhood to life through its characters, local businesses, and strong sense of community. Reading Cannery Row while visiting Monterey offers a unique opportunity to experience the very place that inspired this novel.
About the Book
Published in 1945, Cannery Row follows the everyday lives of the people who call Monterey's waterfront home. Rather than focusing on a single storyline, the novel is about the experiences of the characters and what their everyday life looked like. Filled with Steinbeck's vivid descriptions of Monterey, the novel paints a portrait of a community on Cannery Row that continues to bring visitors here today.
Where to Visit
Cannery Row
No visit inspired by the novel would be complete without seeing Cannery Row itself. Once home to Monterey's thriving sardine canning industry, the historic street serves as the setting of the novel. Today, you'll find restaurants, shops, galleries, and beautiful coastal views while still spotting some of the area's rich history.
Pacific Biological Laboratories
While you’re on Cannery Row, don’t forget to stop by Pacific Biological Laboratories located near the Monterey Bay Aquarium. In the novel, it’s known as Western Biological Laboratory owned by the character Doc, who was inspired by the real life marine biologist, Ed Ricketts, John Steinbeck’s best friend.
San Carlos Beach
Just a short walk from Cannery Row, San Carlos Beach offers beautiful views of Monterey Bay where you can get a sense of the coastal atmosphere that Steinbeck wrote about. It's also a great spot to rest, watch the waves, and see some sea lions, otters, and scuba divers.
Where to Read
Take your copy of Cannery Row to one of the benches in Steinbeck Plaza in Cannery Row. The plaza features a bust of Steinbeck and a monument with Steinbeck and other figures important to Monterey’s history. The plaza also overlooks the Monterey Bay making it a great spot to read this book. If you're looking for a quieter spot, head to our lobby library and enjoy!
