With a new month here, we bring a new book for you to enjoy this month! Welcome back to our Portola Book Club Series where we highlight a novel that connects in a meaningful way to our beautiful destination. Monterey County has a rich literary history, making it a dream for literary tourism, and allowing visitors to explore the places that have shaped some of the most iconic stories while discovering new favorites along the way. This month’s book, The Henna Artist, comes from a New York Times Bestselling Author, Alka Joshi. Joshi was born in India and moved to the United States when she was nine years old. She now resides in Pacific Grove.
About the Book
Set in 1950s Jaipur, The Henna Artist follows Lakshmi, a skilled henna artist who has built an independent life for herself after escaping an unhappy marriage. When her past unexpectedly returns, she must navigate family, ambition, and the difficult choices that come with pursuing freedom.

Point Pinos Lighthouse
Located along the Pacific Grove coastline, the Point Pinos Lighthouse is the oldest continuously operating lighthouse on the West Coast, having first been lit in 1855. Today it is surrounded by the Pacific Grove Municipal Golf Links overlooking the Pacific. Visitors can explore the on-site museum exhibits while learning.
