Jun 10, 2026

With a new month here, we bring a new book for you to enjoy this month! Welcome back to our Portola Book Club Series where we highlight a novel that connects in a meaningful way to our beautiful destination. As always, we’ll have copies of this month’s book available to borrow in our lobby library.

June Pick

This month’s book, The Henna Artist, comes from a New York Times Bestselling Author, Alka Joshi. Joshi was born in India and moved to the United States when she was nine years old. She now resides in Pacific Grove.

About the Book

Set in 1950s Jaipur, The Henna Artist follows Lakshmi, a skilled henna artist who has built an independent life for herself after escaping an unhappy marriage. When her past unexpectedly returns, she must navigate family, ambition, and the difficult choices that come with pursuing freedom.

What to Visit in Pacific Grove

Lovers Point

This beachside park is a popular spot for picnics with scenic ocean views. The beach at Lovers Point is easily accessible and perfect for anyone looking for a relaxing time.

Asilomar State Beach

Known for its sandy dunes and breathtaking sunsets, Asilomar State Beach showcases the natural beauty of the Monterey coastline. Visitors can take a stroll along the coastline and enjoy the views.

 Monterey Bay Coastal Recreation Trail

The Monterey Bay Coastal Recreation Trail stretches nearly 19 miles along the coast, connecting many popular attractions such as Old Fisherman’s Wharf, San Carlos Beach, Cannery Row, and more. This is also a perfect spot to go biking, running, or walking as this trail provides stunning views of our destination.

Point Pinos Lighthouse

Located along the Pacific Grove coastline, the Point Pinos Lighthouse is the oldest continuously operating lighthouse on the West Coast, having first been lit in 1855. Today it is surrounded by the Pacific Grove Municipal Golf Links overlooking the Pacific. Visitors can explore the on-site museum exhibits while learning.

Where to Read

Located near the Portola Hotel & Spa, Memory Garden offers a quiet and peaceful setting where readers can immerse themselves in a book among the beautiful flowers. Lovers Point is also an excellent place to read, with many benches overlooking the water, along with grassy areas that invite visitors to spread out a blanket and relax.

Cocktail Pairing

Pair The Henna Artist with our Asian Persuasion at Jacks Monterey. The turmeric-infused vodka, honey, lemon and carrot juice complement the novel’s vibrant atmosphere and themes of transformation and living authentically.
