Meet Chris Boyle, our amazing concierge at Portola Hotel & Spa! She's an expert on all things Monterey, and especially on the many attractions and activities you can do while visiting. She's a great resource to use while you're both on and off property, and she's one of the best people you can get destination recommendations from. In this week's blog, Chris ranks her top 5 attractions in Monterey, and explains why these places make her list!
1. Picnic at Carmel River State Beach
For those who are really into nature, The first place that in top 5 attractions in Monterey definitely Carmel River State Beach is the perfect place to relax and indulge in other natural living things. Migratory birds are attracted to this mile-long stretch of sand bordered by a lagoon formed by the Carmel River. This quiet beach also has stunning views of Carmel and Point Lobos and is a great place for a picnic during the day, and a magical place to be at sunset.
2. Tour, Tor House and Hawk Tower
Even if you've never heard of 20th-century poet Robinson Jeffers, a pilgrimage to this house built with his own hands offers fascinating insights into both the man and the bohemian ethos of Old Carmel. Tour the beautiful interior of Tor House. Climb Hawk Tower, and experience the atmosphere that inspired some of America's finest poetry, that defines Monterey's Central Coast.

3. Unwind at Rustique Wines
Escape the ordinary and step back in time. Savor a curated wine tasting in their charming 100-year-old barn, nestled amidst rolling hills and lush vineyards of the Santa Lucia Highlands. The picturesque setting and breathtaking mountain views from Rustique Wines provide a relaxing space to indulge in their expressive and high-quality pinot noir and chardonnay. My favorite is the Pinot Noir, for its dark earth and spice characteristics.
4. Take a Hike at Point Lobos
You won't have to look elsewhere to get your Californian coastal fix than Point Lobos, known as the "Crown Jewel of the California State Parks System." Located close to Carmel-by-the-Sea and Monterey, the scenic and abundant hiking trails hug the coast of our scenic peninsula, leading you to hidden coves, beach lookouts, islands filled with birds, and forests of Monterey pine.
5. Look for Sunbathing Sea Lions at Coast Guard Pier
Located on San Carlos Beach, the Coast Guard Pier juts out into the bay and can look like little more than a glorified stretch of concrete. However, this is THE place to come if you want to see wildlife. It doesn't belong to us. Instead, the pier seems to be owned by hundreds, possibly thousands, of huge barking sea lions, taking in the sun. It's best to visit at low tide when the sea lions are basking on the rocks.
